Misuse of basement & inadequate parking facilities two major reasons for the problem
Absence of parking lots and presence of JNU and about 20 schools in its vicinity have been causing problems for the residents of South Delhi's Vasant Vihar area. Visitors to these educational institutions often park their vehicles in and around the locality, aggravating the already acute parking problem where even the residents park their vehicles on the roads.
Apart from the campuses and absence of parking lots, misuse of basements which were supposed to be used as parking spaces for the residents has been a major cause of parking woes in the locality.
"Basements in new buildings which are constructed by the residents in collaboration with builders have been leased by the builders to earn profits, which is why, the residents have to park their vehicles on the roads," said Kailash Vasdev, senior advocate, Supreme Court and resident of Vasant Vihar area.
Vasant Kunj and Vasant Vihar areas are considered as one of the strongest pillars in South Delhi's revenue collection plan. However, widespread commercial establishments along with educational institutions have failed to create adequate parking facilities, leading to haphazard parking in the otherwise well laid-out elite residential area of the South Delhi.
The residents claim that inadequate parking facility in the locality makes school and college students, their parents and visitors to the markets and commercial establishment to park their vehicles on the roads.
"Every morning, parents of the school-going children park their vehicles on the roads outside these schools. However, their love for their children creates issues for the residents as we keep blowing horns but the roads are chock-a-block with cars," said Vineet Maurya, a resident of Vasant Vihar, B-Block
Moreover, the presence of E-rickshaws and autos have also worsened the condition as they gather around a few spots where they can get passengers but they end up creating traffic snarls in those areas.
"Every evening you can see scores of E-rickshaws and autos outside B-Block market. It makes it very difficult to cross the road without any jams," said Jatin Arora, a regular market visitor.
