Several Councillors of North and South Corporation had a tough time on Monday when two monkeys entered the premises of the Civic Centre's A-block which houses the headquarters of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The monkeys created a ruckus on different floors of the building, even as no one was bitten or hurt by them.

Holding the authorities of the Corporation and negligence in security responsible for the ruckus, Mukesh Goel, leader of Congress Councillors in North Corporation, said, "Security persons are deputed at every nook and corner of the Civic Center and despite that two monkeys were able to get inside into 'A' block of the Civic Centre which shows negligence of duty on their part."

"Every year crores of rupees are spent on security by the Corporation and despite that this incident took place," he added.

According to Goyal, the monkeys sneaked inside from the main gate but the staff members at the corporation claimed that they did not see them entering from there.

"Nobody saw the monkeys entering from the main gate. They most probably had reached the first floor of the building after entering from the broken window on the third floor," a senior official said. After some drama, security guards managed to shoo the monkeys away.

Goel, however, demanded an inquiry into the incident saying, "It seems the Corporation is yet to learn a lesson from the incident in which former Deputy Mayor of the Corporation SS Bajwa died due to the attack by a stray monkey."

Bawja died in 2007, a day after being attacked by a monkey. He had fallen from the terrace of his house while trying to chase away the monkey.

Denying the allegations, a senior MCD official said, "Monkeys usually don't enter inside the building. They, however, reached there today in a bid to take shelter as it was raining heavily outside."

He, however, went on describe the lapses by the corporation in controlling the menace. "There has been a shortage of monkey catchers in the corporation. However, we have given an advertisement for the same. At present we have five of them. We are planning to conduct a monkey census in the city as well to help curb the menace."
