All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has issued a 'Pain Management Policy', under which the institute has taken a stand that all attempts will be made to make the registered patients on the premises ' pain-free'. The hospital will undertake a multi-disciplinary approach for assessment and management of pain.

"The plan is to provide a comprehensive approach to the needs of patients who experience both acute and chronic pain; and immediate and sustained relief to needy patients including children, infants, and those with special health care needs. To establish systems for making this facility accessible within the shortest time interval and to train faculty and staff involved in direct patient care," the policy plan stated.

A pain resource team will be made available for consultation after the treating unit has attempted the simple protocols for pain relief. This team comprising one pain physician, four resident doctors, and six nurses in each team will take care of maximum 200 patients. A total of 9-10 pain teams will be required in the entire hospital to follow-up on patients, who have been prescribed strong opioids for pain management or have continuous IV or epidural analgesia.

This team will also formulate policies, educational materials and meetings to further the implementation of the policy.

"Pain clinics and pain management is an old concept in the west but now the hospital has pledged to rope in specialists and nurses and will train them too. What we are still missing is to provide knowledge in medical colleges on pain management," said a senior doctor.

The hospital also plans to evaluate teams through regular audits in the wards about the effectiveness of policy implementation by the nursing team of the area and comprehensive multi-team pre-planned case discussions of difficult pains.
