Over 750 new dengue cases reported in a week

As many as 756 fresh cases of dengue were reported in the national Capital in the last one week, taking the number of people affected by the vector-borne disease this season to 3,865. The figures were reported by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which is responsible for collecting the data. Of the total 3,865 dengue cases, 1,807 affected people were residents of Delhi, while the rest were from other states. Of the 1,807 Delhi residents, 1,103 cases were reported in September itself, the report said. The number of dengue cases reported till September 23 was 3,109.

Dengue and chikungunya are caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clear water. The anopheles mosquito, which causes malaria, can breed in both fresh and muddy water. The number of malaria and chikungunya cases recorded in the city till September 30 stood at 95 and 589, respectively. Dengue has claimed one life in the city during this season, so far. According to the report, breeding of mosquitoes has been reported from 174,593 households in Delhi.

All the three municipal corporations have stepped up the awareness drive. The corporations are distributing pamphlets and plying vehicles with loudspeakers issuing do's and don'ts for the prevention of these diseases.The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has banned the over-the-counter sale of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin and Brufen as their use may "pose a threat" to the dengue and chikungunya patients.
