Even as the sound of crackers continued to echo till late night on the festival of lights, the Delhi Police arrested more than 300 people and registered over 550 cases for violation of Supreme Courts order on firecrackers. The police also apprehended 24 juveniles for the violation.
Thursday saw Delhi police's biggest seizure of firecrackers as well, with city cops seizing almost 2776 kilo firecrackers in one day.
According to sources in the Delhi Police, a total of 310 arrests were made and 562 cases were registered for violating SC norms.
"Amongst the cases, 72 were registered for the illegal sale of firecrackers, in which 87 people were arrested. These violators have been charged under section 188 of Indian Penal Code (disobedience of order)," said a senior police official.
"We have also take legal action against 24 violating juveniles under the provisions of the Juvenile Act, for violating SC orders," the cop said.
In terms of cases registered, Outer, North-East and Rohini districts topped the list with 89, 59 and 58 cases being registered respectively.
Apart from the above, six cases were registered in New Delhi district, 22 in southwest district, 37 in east district, 47 in Shadara, 30 in central, eight in north, 48 in the northwest, 48 in south, 23 in southeast, 52 in west, and 35 in Dwarka district of Delhi.
Keeping in mind the deteriorating air condition in the National Capital Region, the Supreme Court had allowed bursting of firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm only on Diwali. The apex court had also directed and permitted the manufacture and sale of only "green crackers", which have a low light and sound emission and less harmful chemicals.
To ensure compliance, the court had further asked the police to ensure that banned firecrackers were not sold and said in case of any violation, the station house officer (SHO) of the police station concerned would be held personally liable and it would amount to committing contempt of the court.
