Opposition leader in Delhi Vidhan Sabha Vijender Gupta questioned Kejriwal government's "intention" behind stopping e-PoS (electronic point of sale) system after it was implemented. He also accused the government of being hand in glove with ration mafia, thereby letting distribution of fake ration cards go on unchecked. The criticism comes after three minor girls died of starvation in the national Capital on Wednesday.

"After implementation of the e-Pos system in December 2017 / January 2018, all ration cards against which ration was not drawn continuously for three months were to be cancelled. Out of 19.5 lakh ration cards holders, more than 4 lakhs did not draw ration from the fair price shops from January to March 2018," said Gupta. He claimed that instead of taking action as per government rules, Food and Supply Minister Imran Hussain issued instructions not to take any action for cancellation of these fake ration cards. Gupta asked why these fake ration cards were not cancelled till now.

The BJP leader also claimed that ration cards were a scam worth crores waiting to be unearthed. Gupta said that removing fake ration cards from the system would have enabled more deserving to get them made, and hence get the ration. Gupta stated that the decision to cancel 2.93 lakhs ration cards after the incident of death of three girls who died of starvation has been taken under pressure of opposition.

Gupta further criticised chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for initiating Door Step delivery programme, leaving the e-Pos hanging. The politician demanded a probe in the matter. "The AAP government has been party to the distribution of fake ration cards. That is why it refused to reign it in," Gupta said.

The government, in a Cabinet meeting on February 20, had put the use of e-PoS machines in ration shops on hold after it received numerous complaints from beneficiaries who failed to get their monthly ration supplies. The e-PoS system was launched from January 1 this year and makes Aadhaar card mandatory for availing ration benefits.
