Operation Pink: Three held for passing comments at schoolgoing girls in Greater Noida

As part of Gautam Budh Nagar police's Operation Pink, three persons were arrested in Greater Noida for making lewd gestures and passing comments at women and schoolgoing students, on Thursday. Operation Pink was launched on May 1 and women constables dressed in plain clothes go around crowded areas in Noida and Greater Noida to crack down on people who harass women.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Vinod Kumar, Naresh, and Kuldeep, who were found to be making lewd gestures and passing comments to the schoolgoing girls.

"The teams that have been formed to roam around in the civil clothes caught them red-handed for passing comments on the girls. They have been booked under Section 294 (obscene act and songs) of Indian Penal Code and sent to judicial custody," said a senior police officer.

The police have arrested around 15 persons under the Operation Pink campaign. In Noida, the police teams will be deployed in Film City, Sector 18, Atta Market, DLF Mall, City Centre Metro station, Amity University, HCL Company, JSS Academy, Shopprix Mall, etc. In Greater Noida, the police personnel will be motoring Delta-1, Surajpur, Knowledge Park, Alfa Commercial Belt, Rampur Market, Kasna Bus Stand, Kisan Inter College, City Plaza and Kanya Inter College.

According to a senior police official, the first week was assessment drive and now there is action drive. On the basis of assessment drive, the teams have divided these spots in Grade 1 (sensitive) like schools and deserted areas and Grade 2 (less sensitive) like posh areas.

The teams, headed by the nodal officer, SP (crime) Preeti Bala Gupta, have one inspector, five sub-inspectors and 78 women constables.

"Movement of people will be noted and the suspects and harassers will be dealt with accordingly. The teams move around the cities in 15 SUVs and four bikes. The teams have been divided into clusters of seven and eight and will be deployed in rural and urban areas accordingly, "said a senior police officer.
