Following a student's murder at Gurugram's Ryan International School, checks by the city's three civic bodies found that only 77 of the 1005 schools under them have CCTV cameras, despite a three-year-old proposal. Over 4.5 lakh students go to these primary schools.

The municipal corporations have been delaying the proposal citing financial crunch for the past three years. Of the CCTVs installed in 77 schools, 62 schools are under the South Corporation. The East Corporation is in the process of putting up cameras in its 15 schools.

While the North Corporations has 586 schools under it, the South and East Corporations run 581 and 365 schools, respectively.

"The cost of good-quality cameras is high. We have been reeling under a severe fund crunch for the past few years. We had proposed it in the budget three years ago when the financial position was better off," said a senior officer.
