Thousands of colourful kites adorned the Delhi sky on August 15 to celebrate the country's 72nd Independence Day. But unlike previous years, where many people had to be taken to the hospital after they fell off roofs or got hurt during flying kites, this year number of patients was lesser. Only 12 people reached the several government hospitals in the city for any injury sustained during the flying of kites.

While two of the largest government-run tertiary care hospitals - All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Safdarjung Hospital did not see any patient coming in, Ram Manohar Lohia hospital saw five, St Stephens two and Lok Nayak Hospital only received one patient.

"We only received one patient who had been hurt by the string in his stomach and had a cut. He was tended to and given a preliminary treatment after which he was sent home. No major surgeries were reported which is good as every year we receive several patients who have broken their bones after falling off roofs while flying the kites," said a senior resident doctor at the Lok Nayak Hospital.

Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, on the other hand, received five patients, all who needed basic first-aid only. The Tis Hazari-situated St Stephens Hospital saw two patients, one of whom had an injury in the head from the string and the other was a three-year-old girl who had fallen off the roof, she was admitted but released the next day.

While people kept themselves safe and celebrated the day with zeal, many birds and squirrels are reported to have died or injured after getting hurt by the 'manja'. The bird hospital in Chandni Chowk receives hundreds of injured birds after Independence day every year.
