The fifth day of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) strike has finally concluded with protesters signing an online petition to be handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The strike was against autonomy, loan-funding, anti-reservation roster, negative pay revision and a host of other issues, which threaten the foundations of public-funded higher education. The strike drew an overwhelming support from the teaching community, students, karamcharis and DU alumni. Every college has held continuous dharnas for the last five days," said DUTA president Rajib Ray. The online petition was moved by Ray, demanding that the government uphold the right to affordable quality education.

The online petition has already received more than 15,000 signatures.

"The goal is to get 25,000 signatures. DUTA has urged the government to roll back steps like Graded Autonomy and Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) and has urged the government to abandon the NITI Aayog Action Agenda recommendations, and instead listen to the real stakeholders such as students, teachers and karamcharis," said Ray.

Only last month, university teachers had observed two days of strike, shutting classes across departments over alleged irregularities in the appointment of 126 assistant professors in the university's Faculty of Law. Teachers said they were angry as the appointments were made in violation of the norms of University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Delhi High Court had asked the Delhi University in December 2017 to fill vacant posts in a time-bound manner, but nothing much has happened. Members of both the Academic Council and the Executive Council claimed to have written to the vice-chancellor to look into the issues several times in the last few months.
