One person was killed and 13 others injured when over one dozen vehicles were involved in two separate incidents of vehicle pile-up due to smog, which reduced visibility on the Yamuna Expressway on Wednesday morning. While one accident took place in Greater Noida's Dankaur area, another accident was reported from near Mathura.

The accident took place at early morning near Hataura village. According to police, the accident was triggered after a car was rammed from behind by a speeding truck. The truck turned turtle after the collision and because of the foggy morning, over a dozen cars and trucks rammed into each other.

Traffic remained affected on the route for several hours due to the mishap.

Reports of accidents also came in from other parts of the Delhi National Capital Region, which has been affected by this year's worst spell of air pollution for the last few days.

According to police, the Dankaur incident took place around 8:30 am. The collision took place on both sides of the expressway near the under-construction eastern peripheral flyway where lanes on both the sides have been closed and sacks have been also placed.

Around seven cars smashed into each other as there was zero visibility on the road towards Noida from Agra.

"A Scorpio SUV hit the sacks placed on the roadside after which the other cars smashed into the Scorpio one after another," said Farmood Ali Pundir, SHO, Dankaur Police Station.

Four people received minor injuries and were shifted to Kailash Hospital where they were discharged within an hour's time after being given first aid. None of them suffered serious injury.

According to the drivers, due to extremely low visibility, they couldn't see anything on the roads which led to the pileup.

"The drivers claimed that they were not driving too fast as they couldn't spot anything beyond a distance of 20 metres," Pundir added.
