A man involved in 20 criminal cases, including murder and attempt to murders, who managed to give the Delhi Police a slip for over two decades, was finally nabbed on Saturday.

Shambhu, 41, had jumped his parole while lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail and carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh for his arrest. He was arrested by a Delhi Police team from his native place in Azamgarh.

According to the police, they received information from the Hindu Rao Hospital on September 12, 1999, that two persons — Sampuran and Vinod Kumar — had been brought in with grievous injuries inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon. Sampuran was declared dead on arrival and a case of murder was registered.

During the investigation, the cops zeroed in on two suspects — Shambhu and his brother Amarnath — along with two juveniles. Their interrogation revealed that Shambhu and Sampuran were involved in the sale of illegal liquor and were rivals.

"After a trial in 2004, Shambhu and Amarnath were convicted for life. In 2008, Shambhu was granted a month-long parole by the Delhi High Court. When he did not report after the end of this period, a non-bailable warrant was issued and he was declared a proclaimed offender in September, 2010. A reward of Rs one lakh was also declared on his arrest," Additional DCP (south) Chinmoy Biswal said.

A few days ago, a team at the Vasant Kunj (south) police station received an input about Shambhu's movement. "The information was developed and it came to the fore that he used to visit his native village in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh (UP), frequently. A team led by KP Kukrety, ACP, Vasant Vihar, laid a trap near his house native place and he was arrested on Saturday," Biswal added.
