Delhiites could finally breathe a sigh of relief, as drivers of Ola and Uber cabs called off their strike on Thursday after having a meeting with Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain.

Thousands of drivers working with the two taxi aggregators had gone on indefinite strike against 'low' fares and 'lack' of basic amenities.

Sarvodaya Drivers' Association of Delhi (SDAD), which claims to represent 1.5 lakh of drivers in Delhi-NCR, said it has called off its strike till February 27 as the app-based cab aggregators have sought time to resolve the issues.

The meeting had taken place at the residence of the Transport Minister, after SDAD and a large number of drivers complained to the Minister about the alleged non-hearing of their issues by Ola/Uber despite the High Court orders.

"The meeting concluded after over four hours of discussion in an amicable atmosphere. The charter of demand was presented to Ola and Uber officials. The companies assured them to work on their demands shortly and will give their assurance to the High Court on February 28. The companies had also invited the drivers to their office to discuss and resolve the issues peacefully," said a Delhi government official.

Delhi Government had expressed sympathetic concern and said they would waive toll charges at borders on these taxis, similar to black and white taxis and autos.

SDAD vice-president Ravi Rathore said, "In the meeting, an Ola representative assured us of doing away with the DDD rule under which a penalty of Rs 500 is imposed on a driver if he refuses to ferry passenger. The company has also agreed to increase fares from the existing Rs 6 per km." He added that if the demands were not fulfilled by their employers by February 27, drivers will go on strike again.
