With nursery admissions in over 1,700 unaided recognised private schools in the national Capital round the corner, parents with twin children are in a fix as there are no fixed guidelines for their admission in entry-level classes. Most schools allocate points for the first-born child and parents of twins are confused about who among their kids would get those points.

Last year, Shalini Verma, 35, a teacher by profession, ran from pillar to post to get nursery seats for her twins, a son and a daughter, but failed. She was getting a seat for her daughter under the girl child category in an east Delhi school but she did not want to separate her twins. “My twins are inseparable. I cannot even think of putting them in different schools. I will try again this year,” she said.

“I have twin sons. We cannot use the points given to younger sibling or girl child. The only points available for us are the neighbourhood points,” lamented Ritu Sharma, a resident of east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area.

Similarly, Ankit Singh, a resident of west Delhi’s Karol Bagh area, who is seeking nursery seats for her twin daughters in the coming session, said: “Most school forms do not mention anything regarding twins. Some schools ask for affidavits to prove that they are twins.”

On the other hand, several schools such as the Delhi Public School in Vasant Kunj, are allocating points for twins. “Also, some schools give admission to both twins, in case they qualify. But there is no fixed criteria for their admission. The Directorate of Education (DoE) should come up with some clear guidelines for parents of twins. We are getting queries from parents as they are confused which child would get first child points, ” said Sumit Vohra, Founder, admissionsnursery.com, an online portal for all nursery admission-related queries.

Meanwhile, for principals as well, it is a big dilemma. “Earlier, we used to interact with parents before admission and discuss such cases. But now, after the implementation of the point system, things are different,” said the principal of an east Delhi private school.

ADMISSION DETAILS

  • Nursery admissions in over 1,700 private unaided recognised schools are expected to begin from January 1, 2018. There were three major criteria till last year — neighbourhood, alumni (parents as alumni), and siblings (siblings attending the same school).

  • The process this year is going to be same, with the only change being the imposition of an upper age limit of four years for applicants under the general category.
