The house of a deputy general manager of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) was looted in the Surajpur area of Greater Noida on Sunday evening. Cash and jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh was stolen. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.

According to the police, the house belonged to BC Galav, the NTPC deputy general manager, who resided in the Jyoti Kiran society in Pi-1 Sector of the Surajpur area.

The police said that the incident took place between 3 pm and 7 pm on Sunday when the family was out for some work. According to the family members, they were preparing for their daughter's wedding and had ?12 lakh in cash and silver and gold jewellery worth ?6 lakh in the house.

"We had gone to Jagat Farms market in Greater Noida but when we returned we found that the lock on the front gate was broken and the entire house was ransacked. The cash and other valuable items were missing. When we asked the security guards of the society, they said they had no idea that a theft had taken place," said Galav.

The family said that the burglars took all the cash and jewellery. They ransacked drawers, cupboards and lockers. The police suspect that the burglars probably knew of the upcoming wedding in the family and the presence of cash and jewellery in the house.

Following a complaint, the police have lodged a case of theft under the Indian Penal Code section 380 against unknown persons.

"We are going through the CCTV camera footage to get leads in the case. We are questioning security staff and vendors near the society," said a senior police officer.
