Days after news of 16 deaths of children, due to Diphtheria, at the North Delhi Municipal Corporation-run Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases, came out, some of them due to late treatment caused by unavailability of curative injections, NDMC has now announced that they are procuring the injections from Kasauli.

"We have sent one of our doctors to the laboratory in Kasauli to get the much-needed Anti-Diphtheria Serum injection sets. We will get the first batch of 100 hopefully by tomorrow and the rest 4,00 will come in the coming week. Without delay, we are doing our best to provide treatment to the ill patients," said Adesh Gupta, Mayor, North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

A total of 300 cases of Diphtheria have been reported in Delhi this year. Of these, 16 out of the 85 admitted died at the North Delhi Municipal Corporation-run Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases Hospital between September 6 and 21. 2017 saw a rise in cases as compared to the previous years, this year too there has been a rise in the cases.

"Diphtheria is a serious disease, which can cause fatalities if there has been no vaccination. It is very important to provide three DPT injections to kids starting at six-month. If not treated, it can also affect kidneys and other organs," said Dr Anupam Sibal, Senior Pediatrician, Apollo Hospital.

While experts say that all the close contacts of the patients including the health care workers should be administered with Diphtheria vaccine, if vaccination status is not clear, and the patient should be kept in isolation, it has been alleged that the kids were all put in rooms in bulk, next to each other.
