Residents of the JJ Colony slum in Noida are receiving hefty electricity bills, which is a lot more than their regular power consumption. With only one or two rooms in houses, the residents are getting bills amounts in multiple thousands. The power connections of the area are provided by Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), a subsidiary company of UPPCL, the officials of the department, however, stated that the bills could not be higher than the respective units consumed by the households. According to them, there is more construction of slums in the colony and due to the illegal commercial activities, the residents might be facing the problem.

The colony is next to the Noida sector 16 metro station and most of the resident's are daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, household servants and street hawkers.

As per one of the local resident Maruddin (56), who is a rickshaw puller, he paid a five months bill of Rs 51,424 for a slum.

"I live with my wife and a 23-year-old son in a small room and survive on my wages, due to the threats by electricity officials of getting arrested, I had to pay the total amount after borrowing it from a relative," said Maruddin.

Slum residents said that the problem is being faced by almost all the people in the area however the bills have unexpectedly increased after installing the new meters. People are confused whether to pay the arrears or latest bills as some of them have paid the huge amounts and some have not paid the bills for six months.

"I have paid a bill of Rs 6,919 for the month of September 18, whereas Rs1262 for October for the same consumption of units," said Sushila Devi (49), another resident.

"Earlier the residents were stealing the electricity by putting illegal connections but after the installation of meters they need to pay the amount as per their unit readings," said Ajay Kumar, Executive engineer of PVVNL.

"During a regular checking, we found that one of the households was running an RO plant in a slum but if some of them are still facing such problems than we are here to resolve the issues as per procedures. For this, the residents can apply for installation of checking meters by paying a fee of Rs 300," said Kumar.
