Taking into account the rising crimes against women, the Gautam Budh Nagar police in Noida will soon start conducting self-defence workshops for young women in the district. The workshops will be held in schools and colleges.

The initiative has been taken by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Love Kumar in order to teach women means to protect themselves from criminals or attackers in times of danger.

The police said they will get in touch with the administrations of colleges and schools for organising the workshops. The Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suniti will be supervising this initiative. A team of officers is being formed for the workshop.

"The process of holding self-defence workshops for young women in the area has been started. We want women to be equipped with techniques to deal with anti-social elements in a crisis situation. Soon, this initiative will be implemented after proper planning," said Kumar.

The course is aimed at giving women the basic skills to defend themselves in an area where crimes against women, including sexual harassment, random attacks in public, as well as rape, are common.

"It will be a good experience for our students. Training in self-defence will not only help them protect themselves, but also give them career opportunities and make them independent," said Kavita Mehta, a teacher.

Speaking to DNA, a young woman, on condition of anonymity, said, "We feel unsafe on the roads of Noida. Several incidents has shaken us, but let's hope these training classes will help me and hundreds like me, regain confidence."

On May 25, around 1:30 am, eight members of a family travelling in a car from Jewar to Bulandshahr were stopped on the Jewar-Bulandshahr highway by six men. The gang robbed the family and shot dead a man who tried to resist them. They also allegedly dragged four women to a nearby field and gang-raped them.

On June 19, a woman who was picked up by three men from Gurgaon was gang-raped in a moving car. The victim was later thrown out of the car in Greater Noida.

Need of the hour

The workshops will be held in schools and colleges in the district for a bigger reach.
The police are going to collaborate with administrations of educational institutes to conduct the workshops.
The project comes as a resistance to the rising number of violences against women in  the New Delhi and NCR.
