Residents of sectors adjoining 123 in Noida on Saturday held a protest near the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) roundabout against the Noida Authority's decision have a landfill site in the area.

On October 17, the Noida authority informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) of a 25-acre landfill site in Sector 123 after the tribunal banned dumping of waste in Sector 138A following complaints of pollution and health-related problems by residents.

However, the plant at Sector 123 is close to five schools including a play school, several residential sectors and highly populated villages of Noida.

"Our lives have been put at stake by the Noida Authority by initiating this plant that will process up to 600 metric tons of waste everyday. They don't seem to care that this plant would emit poisonous gases, toxic fly ash and heavy metals causing air pollution and groundwater contamination," said Ajay Kunwar, a resident of Gadi Chaukhandi.

"The worst part is that the Noida Authority itself has given in writing that the said location is not suitable for garbage dumping or setting up any such plant and still have proposed the location to NGT," said Varun Mehta, a resident of Sector 121.

Meanwhile, the Noida Authority said it has sought help from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to get environmental clearances for the site earmarked for a landfill at Sector 123.

"In compliance with NGT's orders, we met the pollution board officials and they have inspected the Sector 123 site. We have also started the process of roping in a central government consultant who will guide us in hiring a private agency for setting up a waste-to-energy plant," said RK Mishra, additional CEO, Noida Authority.

The Noida Authority had proposed to set up the landfill site in 2013, following which residents had moved the NGT against it. The tribunal directed the authority to seek necessary approvals for setting up a landfill so that residents could file their objections.

On October 24, the NGT directed the Noida Authority and the state of Uttar Pradesh to complete the construction of a waste-to-energy plant within six months from the date of order. The tribunal said the Noida Authority can use Sector 123 land as a temporary site for dumping waste.
