Following the orders given by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath late on Thursday night to stop dumping garbage at the newly constructed landfill in sector 123, the authorities have stopped dumping the waste in the aforementioned site. The authorities confirmed that they are exploring alternate sites for temporary storage and management of solid waste on Friday.

According to a senior authority official, they have got orders from the UP CM to immediately stop dumping the garbage at the newly constructed landfill in sector 123. The decision came after a meeting of officials with the CM corresponding to increasing people agitation and with adherence to Solid Waste Management and Handling Rules, 2016. This directive was given out during the meeting on Thursday evening with Alok Tandon, Chairman and CEO of Noida Authority, in Lucknow.

Sources revealed that the CM was unhappy with the authority because it has been disregarding public wishes, and was going ahead with something that is clearly in defiance of wider public interests. Widespread protests had emerged by the localities due to the proximity of the landfill plant to the residential areas and its corresponding ill health effects.

"Following the orders, we are exploring alternative for temporary storage and management of solid waste. However, we didn't do anything illegal. We were just following the orders given by NGT." said RK Mishra, Additional CEO Noida Authority.

The construction of landfill was undertaken by the authorities after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had issued an interim order on May 29 directing it to immediately stop dumping waste at a forest located in Sector 54. A report of the Noida Authority says that the landfill sites in sector 123 and 151A were against environmental rules and were rejected in 2015.

Residents had tried everything from silent protests to candle march, from knocking at all the doors of the officials to taking on Twitter, from burning effigies to hunger strikes, from pelting stones on the police party to getting lathi charged, from even getting washed away with water cannons to getting arrested but the administration was not willing to listen to them at any cost. Over the past two weeks, several leaders also joined the protesting residents.

However, now the decision has been welcomed by the residents. "It is a great move by the CM. We expect more thoughtful and speedy decisions henceforth," said Sanjeev Dixit, President AOA, Homes 121.
