Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate (DM) Brijesh Narain Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Love Kumar inspected the under-construction Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) in the GB Nagar area on Wednesday. The officials' aim was to get a first-hand assessment of the project and to ensure that work is carried out smoothly.

The DM also chaired a meeting with the officials concerned, and told them that the EPE was an ambitious project for the Centre and Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He directed the officials to avoid any delay and keep a close eye on all developments regarding the project.

Singh also met with the farmers whose land was taken for the project. The DM told them that the project will benefit generations to come, so, instead of opposing the project, they should help create history.

The EPE project, which was marred by land possession issues, will be operational in 2017. Most of the land issues have been sorted out now.

The 135-km expressway was planned in 2006, following a Supreme Court (SC) order to form a Ring Road outside Delhi and streamline the non-Delhi-bound traffic to bypass the national Capital. The aim was to deal with the rising air pollution levels and number of road accidents in the Capital.

The project is expected to prevent two lakh vehicles from entering into the Capital daily. These vehicles will be diverted from Ghaziabad to Gautam Budh Nagar, Faridabad, and Palwal, and finally towards Manesar. The Baghpat-Ghaziabad stretch of this expressway is 24.5 km; the Ghaziabad-Gautam Budh Nagar stretch is 22 km; Gautam Budh Nagar to Faridabad stretch is 21 km; and Faridabad to Palwal strecth is 22 km.

"The work on the project is in full swing and we are expecting that it will be finished before the deadline. The SC has fixed a deadline of July, 2018, but we are expecting to complete the project by this year itself," EPE Project Director Kishore Kanyal told DNA.
