The district court of Gautam Budh Nagar on Monday granted bail to the 76-year-old colonel who was arrested on charges of molestation levelled by the Muzaffarnagar's additional district magistrate Harish Chandra's wife following a spat between the two sides over an alleged illegal construction by the ADM's family. Both the ADM and his wife are on the run.

On Monday evening, retired colonel Virendra Pratap Singh Chauhan returned home and was greeted by the residents upon reaching Arun Vihar in Sector 29. The colonel had been in Luksar jail since his arrest on August 14.

"The entire Arun Vihar is my home and I want to thank all my neighbours for standing with him in the tough time. The public support gave me strength. I know the truth will come out eventually," said Chauhan who was accompanied by his family.

On August 14, the 76-year-old retired Colonel was arrested on charges of molestation levelled by the ADM's wife following a spat between the two sides over alleged illegal construction by the ADM's family.

A resident alleged that Chauhan had a dispute of illegal occupation and construction by ADM Harish Chandra for the past three years.

Chandra is his neighbour in Sector 29 and is currently the ADM in Muzaffarnagar. He was also an officer of Noida Authority in the past. Colonel Virender had lodged a complaint several times in Noida Authority regarding illegal occupation and construction but Noida Authority did not take any action on Chandra due to his clout.

"On August 14, the colonel was sitting in front of the park and was waiting for the cab to go to Agra. Chandra reached the park with his wife Usha. They were accompanied by Chandra's security guards," said a resident.

The gunner and the house help of the ADM were arrested on Sunday for assaulting and attempting to murder Chauhan.

Locals demand that the illegal construction done by Chandra should be demolished by the Authority and an income tax inquiry should also be initiated against him. Several Army veterans and Chauhan's family had taken out a protest march in Sector 29 on Saturday demanding the immediate release of the retired colonel from jail and arrest of the accused ADM. The colonel's family had also filed a cross-FIR on August 19.

Locals had earlier alleged that the whole incident had been handled carelessly. A sub-inspector, who was the police post-in-charge for Arun Vihar, was earlier suspended on August 18 for his failure to collect the evidence on spot.
