It seems the Delhi Police's appeals to the citizens to act as Good Samaritans have fallen on deaf ears. A 27-year-old juice vendor, Manoj, was hit by a speeding Audi car at ITO on Saturday. The impact of the collision was such that Manoj was thrown up in the air. He fell upon an iron fence erected on the divider. None of the passersby on the busy junction came forward to help even as the youth was impaled to death.

Meanwhile, police detained the Audi owner on Monday evening and also recovered the car.

Those who witnessed the brutal scene said even though Manoj's abdomen was pierced open, he might have been saved with timely medical intervention. But no one touched him till the police arrived at the spot.

The freak accident took place around 11 pm, while Manoj was crossing the main road in front of the Doll Museum at ITO. The speeding Audi was coming from the Delhi Gate side. Witnesses said the victim was flung about 20 feet up in the air and then he directly landed on the iron grill, which pierced his lower abdomen. The passersby simply stood around and watched him cry as he slowly succumbed to his critical injuries.

Digani, the owner of the juice corner, where Manoj had been working for the last five years, said: "Manoj belonged to Bihar and used to sleep on the top of the juice corner along with another employee, who informed me about the accident. I live in Gandhi Nagar and I rushed to the spot as soon as I heard the news. The body was in a pathetic shape and the police had just arrived. It took them at least half an hour to pull the body out."

Manoj's co-worker, who did not wish to be named, claimed that if he had been taken to a nearby hospital without any delay, he could have been saved. "No one came forward to help. The police claimed that he had died a long time back but they are not medical experts. Finally, they put him in a bag and took him to Maulana Azad Medical College, and from there, to the LNJP mortuary," he said.

The Audi owner, a Greater Kailash resident, however, could be nabbed because of a tip-off by a Good Samaritan only. A senior police officer said the car was traced after a man called up the police, when he came to know about the accident through news, and informed them about a damaged Audi.

Initial questioning of the Audi owner revealed that he was driving himself at the time of accident. He owns a business at Ansari Road and was returning home. He had left his car near Anand Vihar before fleeing. All these facts, however, are yet to be ascertained, a senior police officer said.
