Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar on Saturday launched the party’s Delhi unit with a view to expanding the party’s base outside Bihar and “making it a national party again.”

“We all know that the Janata Dal was a national party which got divided into several factions. But it is JD (U) which has carried forward its ideals. If I have any national ambition, it is to make our party regain its national stature once again,” the Bihar CM said in the Capital on Saturday.

Interestingly, the JD(U) will be contesting elections against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which had openly supported the party during the Bihar assembly elections.

Apart from AAP, the BJP, and the Congress are also set to lock horns in the municipal polls, which are expected to take place early next year.

There are three municipal corporations in Delhi with a total of 272 seats and the BJP has been in power in the north, east and south civic bodies since 2007. The party hopes to maintain its winning streak. The Congress, the principal opposition in all three civic bodies, however has claimed that both the BJP and AAP will face the anti-incumbency vote.

AAP, on the other hand, has been riding on its historic mandate of the Delhi assembly elections and has announced it will completely sweep the municipal polls.

Addressing the first workers’ meet in Delhi, after assuming party president-ship earlier this year, Nitish advised the young members of the party to learn from the ideals of the former leaders of India. “Today the situation of people living in Bihar villages is much better than those in National Capital Delhi. You should come and see the cleanliness and development in the state. Even though Delhi is the capital, it does not have the freedom to function independently,” he said.

The Bihar CM cited statistics to project his state’s development graph, ever since he assumed charge in 2005.

The party’s Delhi unit, which started functioning from Saturday under the president-ship of Raj Singh Mann, will work for strengthening its organisational base ahead of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls in 2017, a party functionary said.

Political experts also cite the large number of Purvanchal voters as a major reason for JD(U) to join election battle ground in Delhi. Last week, the BJP, in a sudden move, made Bihari leader Manoj Tewari as the Delhi BJP president, removing Satish Upadhyay.

This will be the first election since February 2015 when AAP won the national capital with a huge mandate. All major political parties including the Congress and BJP are banking on the municipal polls to make a comeback in the states political scenario.
