After her parents passed away when she was nine, a girl, whose name has not been revealed, was kidnapped from her aunt's house in Bihar by a woman and sold to a brothel owner on GB Road in Delhi.

After spending two years in confinement, the girl, who turned 11, was asked to 'entertain' her first customer, who was much elder then her. Resistance led to brutality, thrashing and sexual assaults. She was repeatedly raped by five different men one day and was forced into prostitution every night.

The girl was rescued during a secretive raid by the Delhi Police and a Delhi Commission for Women's team two days ago, when one of the former workers of the brothel sent the commission an anonymous SMS informing them about the victim's condition.

A spokesperson from the commission said that the man who had contacted them, was then called to the DCW office where he was asked to furnish additional details about the girl's whereabouts.

The Delhi Police was then roped in and a joint raid led to the rescue of the 15-year-old victim from the brothel.

Police officers said the victim, in her statement, alleged that her life is in danger. A case is being registered on her complaint and the matter is being probed, police said.

"The victim said that she lived in Bihar when both her parents passed away. When she was staying with her aunt, she was kidnapped and sold to the owner of a brothel on GB Road. The brothel owner initially sent the victim to stay with her daughter-in-law, and when she turned 11, they brought her back and coerced her into prostitution. She also said that whenever there was a police raid at the brothel, the owner would send her to her daughter-in-law's house," the spokesperson said.

The girl also told police, and the commission, that whenever she tried to escape from the brothel, she was always caught as there are CCTV cameras that dot the brotherl.

She even said that the brothel owner had instructed her that whenever there was a police raid she should tell them that she is 20, and had joined the 'profession' by choice.

Reacting to the incident, DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal said that minor girls are regularly sold and forced into prostitution on GB Road.

"The prostitution racket is flourishing right under the nose of the establishment. Parliament is just 3 kilometres away and the police station just 100 meters from GB Road where the brothels are operational," she said.

Analysis

The problem of forcing minor girls into prostitution is not a new one. Tougher legislation and more surprise searches are needed to ensure that young girls are not exploited indiscriminately.
