The New Delhi Municipal Council on Wednesday moved a step closer towards complete digitalization. With about 52,000 fully smart electricity meters, the residents in NDMC can now monitor their power consumption and find out real-time usage of electricity in their households.

These meters will now make the billing process transparent and residents can pay their bill at any given time through NDMC's mobile application.

The adoption of smart meters will lead to an annual saving of Rs. 12.47 crore to NDMC, which includes revenue due to improvement in billing efficiency.

Smart meters are part of the overall Advanced Metering Infrastructure solution (AMI) that measures and records consumers' electricity usage at different times of the day and sends this information to the energy supplier through over-the-air communication technology.

This gives consumers better access to information and enables them to make more informed decisions on the use of electricity in their homes, leading to reduced power wastage, and providing long-term carbon and financial savings.

With these meters, the residents can now trace their consumption pattern through-out the day and monitor unwanted power consumption. The council is expecting reduction of unwanted power consumption by this feature of the smart meter.

"Residents can check which socket has been consuming most energy and turn it off accordingly. Moreover, if they are going out of town, they can check if the meter has been showing fake consumption numbers," said MS Sherawat, NDMC spokesperson.
