In an attempt to make the service more environment and people friendly, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to go all out for its upcoming stations.

Sources said the new stations will ditch the inverted 'U' design of the roof in favour of a flat roof to maximise solar power generation. In addition, the new stations will have ramps for differently abled people and screen doors to prevent mishaps.

The DMRC has already started installing solar panels at all Phase III stations. Apart from the 36 stations of Pink and Magenta Lines, seven elevated stations of the Green Line will also have solar panels. The change in design will ensure less dependency on artificial lighting as well, saving energy. "Our aim is to make the newer stations completely solar-powered by the end of 2017," a DMRC official said.

Besides, the platforms at the new stations will also flaunt a new look, as the stations are being designed in an oval shape. "The platforms will be broader in the middle and narrower at the ends to cater better to the rising commuter strength. Also, special preference will be given to the differently abled," an official said.

Apart from easy access for wheelchairs and elderly, the elevators will open in the middle of the platforms to ensure minimum inconvenience to the differently abled. The Delhi Metro has also reduced the height of its ticket counters, making them more accessible. The new stations will also be equipped with screen doors to avoid any untoward incident.

Metro Phase III is all set to be inaugurated soon. The Metro ridership has grown exponentially at the rate of 17.5% over the last five years, with the current daily ridership hovering around 28 lakh.
