The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is all set to launch its Skill Development Centre, a Smart City project, on June 25. The event will mark two years of the Smart City Mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project that is spread across 20 cities, including Lutyens' Delhi.

The Council intends to impart skill training to over 1,080 students under its first phase, with the launch of health and solar energy courses at the NP Boys School, Mandir Marg, this month.

"We will be starting with nine courses related to health and solar energy sectors. These will include for pharmacy assistants, dental assistants, vision technicians, home health aid and diabetic educators, among others. There will be 120 students per course. We are already flooded with applications," Abhay Jain, Director of the project, said.

In the second phase, the civic body will come up with next-generation skill courses, such as robotics, animation, augmented reality and virtual reality (ARVR), and 3D printing, among others.

"The gen-next courses will be launched from the upcoming skill centre at Moti Bagh, which will have world-class facilities. We have got a 25 sqm plot there. We hope to lay the foundation stone for the new centre on June 25 itself," he said.

The Council aims at establishing a grid of skill centres across the area. For some of the courses, the Council is tying up with the Central government's National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
