The RSS-affiliated Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas on Tuesday claimed that the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) has made several changes in its textbooks based on the recommendations sent by them.

Addressing an event organised to mark its 14th anniversary at Delhi University's PGDAV College, Nyas' National Secretary Atul Kothari said, "The process of revolutionising the entire education system will take a lot of time. We need to remove biases from the entire system. The NCERT has recently made many changes in its books based on the recommendation sent by our organisation. And, this is just the beginning. We need to dedicate more time and efforts to serve the purpose."

The organisation, headed by Dinanath Batra, former leader of RSS' education-wing Vidya Bharti, had last year sent a five-page recommendation letter to NCERT. The organisation had asked the Council to remove several things including Urdu words, a poem by Rabindranath Tagore and Mirza Ghalib from its Hindi textbooks.

However, Kothari said they have never demanded the removal of Tagore's literature from the textbooks. "It was not a part of our demands. We requested the Council to highlight the lives of the national heroes like Swami Vivekanand, Maharana Pratap, Shivaji and Maharishi Arvind. We are glad they have acknowledged the recommendations. However, we are yet to review many books," Kothari said.

"Besides, the Council has also included information about our ancient education system and ideologies. It's a sign of progress," he said.

Batra, however, said the process of "reviewing books is still on". "We have heard that the entire process will end by this December. We are hopeful that the Hindi books will become more cultural and traditional," he said. Batra has been advocating 'Indianisation' of country's education system with Hindi as the sole medium of instructions.

Meanwhile, to mark its 14th anniversary, the organisation has launched 'Sampark Abhiyaan' across the country, starting from Delhi. "Under this programme, our volunteers are meeting teachers, principals and officials in colleges and schools to tell them about our initiatives and ideologies. We have met more than 800 academia in Delhi only and invited them to work for the cause of education," said Sanjay Swami, Delhi coordinator of Nyas.

‘NOT TAGORE ONE’

Kothari said the RSS body never demanded the removal of Tagore’s literature from the textbooks. “We requested the Council to highlight the lives of the national heroes only,” he said.
