Traffic halted at several places in the national capital and vehicular movement slowed down on Sunday following the Dharma Mahasabha organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at the iconic Ramlila Maidan.

The Delhi Traffic Police had issued an advisory on Saturday, detailing the routes that will be blocked due to the rally.

Roads such as Vikas Marg, Ajmeri Gate, ITO, Paharganj, Daryaganj, Karol Bagh witnessed long jams that were made worse since it was a Sunday.

While people had stepped out to spend the day out with their families, their spirits were dampened by the serpentine queues of vehicles. Cars moved at a snail's pace on these roads due to diversions put in place by Delhi Traffic Police on Sunday. No traffic was allowed on Ranjeet Singh flyover from Guru Nanak Chowk to Barakhamba Road; Vivekanand Marg, JLN Marg, Kamla Market to Guru Nanak Chowk; ChamanLal Marg near VIP Gate and Ramlila Maidan. Vikas Marg bore a major brunt of the diversions as buses coming from Sikandra Road and Tilak Marg and bound for Red Fort to Railway Station through the Delhi Gate, were diverted on Ring Road via Vikas Marg.

"I was stuck in the jam for more than an hour and the distance to be covered was only 5 kilometres. I wonder what the situation would have been had it been a working day," rued Deepak Vohra, a resident of Laxmi Nagar. "It was the worst day to step out. Since most of the diverted traffic was also plying on selected routes, Vikas Marg was choked. I regretted stepping out of my house," Arunima Roy of Bapa Nagar said.

People also complained of cab drivers refusing bookings due to the jams. They also complained of surge pricing due to limited availability of taxis.

Anil Mittal, Additional PRO, Delhi Police said, 5,500 Delhi Police personnel were deployed for law and order at Ramlila Maidan. He further said that 53 companies, including 13 outer forces were deployed to manage the crowd.
