The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested three persons, including the hitman who facilitated the escape of Khalistan Liberation Front chief from Nabha jail in Punjab on November 27.

Chanpreet Singh aka Channa, Harjot Singh aka Jot, and Ranjit Singh Kalkat were arrested on Wednesday night from Lajpat Nagar where they had rented a flat. The trio was planning to flee to Punjab and even tried to fire at the police but were unsuccessful in their attempt.

"Three sophisticated semi-automatic pistols along with 17 live cartridges of 7.65 mm have been recovered from them. Chanpreet Singh, the main accused, along with Harjot Singh and Ranjit Singh, entered the Nabha jail, snatched the guard's gun and opened indiscriminate fire to give a cover to the jail inmates to escape," said DCP Special Cell, PS Kushwah.

Channa has several cases registered against him and was lodged in Kapurthala jail. He was out on bail since the last four months, and that is when he met the other 13 persons to carry out the jailbreak. The planning of the jailbreak started around September. Then, Channa along with Pinda entered the house of a businessman in Model Town area of Ludhiana posing as CBI officials. Later they were joined by around six local men of Pinda and carried out a dacoity.

At gun point, they decamped with around 2.5 kg of gold and Rs 10 lakh. A case is already registered in Ludhiana. The money was then used to fund the jailbreak.

Channa was earlier involved in six cases of murder, attempt to murder and arms act. During interrogation Channa and Harjot revealed that after the jailbreak, they fled to Chandigarh and stayed there for a night. When they got to know that Pinda was caught by Uttar Pradesh Police is when they shifted to Delhi. Shelter was provided by Kalkat in Lajpat Nagar. All of them belong to Hoshiarpur in Punjab.

"Channa's name figured in the list of top gangsters of Punjab and nearby states. In the Ropar jail where he was lodged, he met Vicky Gonder who planned Nabha jailbreak with Pinda and others," added Kushwah. Harjot's father was in the Indian Army. After coming out from the jail, Channa started living with Harjot. Harjot's elder brother is also close to Channa.

The Special Cell had earlier arrested KLF Chief Harminder Singh alias Mintu who had escaped along with five other inmates from Nabha jail on November 27. His interrogation revealed the details about the hideouts of the accused in Delhi.
