Muslim man allegedly forced to chant 'Jai Mata Di'

A 29-year-old Muslim man has alleged that he was bullied onboard a bus in Bawana area by two men, who asked him to utter religious slogans, and manhandled him when he resisted. Senior police officers said that a case of assault has been registered and that his claims are being verified.

The incident took place on Sunday night, when the victim, Maulana Aftab Alam, a resident of JJ Colony in Bawana, who teaches at a mosque in outer Delhi, was heading home from Shahbad Dairy area. In his complaint, he told the police that the duo raised suspicion on his nationality and when he said that he is an Indian, they asked him to repeat religious slogans after them, police said.

"In his complaint, Alam has mentioned that the two men, who had boarded the same bus and got down at Prahladpur village bus stand, asked him if he was an Indian. When he said yes, they asked him to say 'Jai Mata Di', which Alam said he did. But the men still manhandled him and thrashed him," said a senior police officer.

After the duo got down, Alam called the police and got his statement registered. DCP Rohini, Rajneesh Gupta said that a case of assault has been registered and the man's claims of being forced to repeat religious quotes, are being verified.

"A case has been registered under IPC sections 323 and 341. Efforts to identify the men are underway and the matter is being probed," Gupta said.
