The Delhi residents have become more sensitised towards keeping the Metro clean over the years, according to data. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has registered a three-time decrease in the number of offenders for littering the train and Metro stations since 2014.

According to the data available with the DMRC, it has fined nearly 980 people for spitting and dirtying the surroundings till now this year. The figure was around 2,700 in 2014, which came down to 1,935 in 2015. The offenders decreased further in 2016, with the DMRC issuing 1,885 challans.

The reduction in such fines is a pat on the back of residents, considering the huge rush of commuters on the Metro daily. The train that connects the length and breadth of the National Capital Region, including border areas of the Capital, receives a footfall of 27 lakh passengers every year, and an annual number that touches around 100 crore.

Anyone found spitting in the train or otherwise dirtying the stations, is fined Rs 200 by the DMRC. Apart from posters and graffiti on stations and stickers inside the train, as well as tickers warning passengers from dirtying the train, the DMRC also uses public announcement system to create awareness regarding cleanliness among passengers. The train and stations are also monitored by CCTVs, contributing to the DMRC's efforts to keep the surroundings clean.

Expressing happiness at the falling number of offenders for littering, a DMRC official said people were becoming increasingly aware of the significance of cleanliness. "We give the entire credit to commuters for helping us in our constant endeavour to provide world class facilities to them when they travel in the Metro. The reduced figures are heartening considering lakhs of passengers that use the Delhi Metro daily," the official said.

Recently, the DMRC had observed the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by planting 600 trees in Delhi on Sunday. It also brought in a self-help group, comprising several cleanliness volunteers and NGOs, who enthusiastically dedicated themselves to 'shramdaan' (effort donation) towards cleanliness initiatives.
