An MBBS dropout was arrested by the south-west district police on Saturday for stealing and trading in high-end motorcycles online on websites such as OLX and Quikr. With this arrest, over 25 cases of motorcycle theft have been solved.

"Sarfaraj Ahmed alias Amit Ghosh alias Dr Anand Srivastava alias Ankit Sharma used to prepare forged documents of the vehicles and then sell them on web portals. He had even rented a godown to keep the motorcycles. His father works as an accountant with the Chhattisgarh state government. Ahmed hails from Raipur and had gone to Warsaw in Poland to get his MBBS degree. But he quit the course after two years,"Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Surendra Kumar said.

According to the police, Ahmed stole at least 50 bikes, and had rented a godown in Matiala to park them. He would then change their number plates and forge documents.

After a steep rise in the number of vehicle thefts in the area, a special team was constituted to keep a track of stolen vehicles, modus operandi, and people involved. During this process, several persons were questioned and the team got to know that an educated person was involved in most of the cases.

On February 18, acting on a tip-off that a man would be coming on a stolen motorcycle near the MCD Primary School in Matiala, Uttam Nagar, early in the morning, a trap was laid near the school. Finally, Ahmed appeared and was stopped. He tried to mislead the team and said he was a doctor. On searching him, two fake driving licenses, with his photos but different names, and two fake registration cards were recovered from his possession. The motorcycle that he was riding on was found to be stolen from the Prasad Nagar area.

"Several fake number plates, IDs, RCs, SIM cards, laptop, and printer were recovered from his possession. As many as 18 high-end motorcycles and scooters were also seized," Kumar added.

During interrogation, Ahmed revealed that he met his wife in Poland, who was also pursuing the same course, and they married in 2013. The role of his wife is also being probed. Later, the couple shifted to Kiran Garden in Uttam Nagar in a rented accommodation but they did not have any permanent job or fixed income. Facing a severe financial crunch, Ahmed got involved in stealing motorcycles for easy money.

He used to first recce the area and then set a target. Since he was good with computers, he would prepare fake documents himself. He would then sell the vehicles online. After the sale was completed, the portal ID was deactivated and the SIM was destroyed. He used one SIM only once in order to remain untraceable.
