The Gautam Budh Nagar police have arrested a maulvi for allegedly sexually assaulting an eight- year-old girl inside a madrasa in Barola village of Sector 49, on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the accused have been identified as Sabha Karim, who was on the run since the incident which took place on Saturday.
" We had received an information that Karim would be visiting the Barola village. So we had formed a team. At around 7 am, we spotted Karim who tried to flee the spot. However, he was overpowered and nabbed," said Pankaj Pant, Station House Officer of Sector 49 police station, Gautam Budh Nagar.
Police had registered a case under sections 354 (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.
"Karim was produced in front of the court on Tuesday and has been sent for judicial custody of 14 days," Pant added. On Saturday afternoon, Karim, a teacher inside a madrasa, had allegedly sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl in Barola village of Sector 49 when she had come to study at the madrasa.
When the girl reached there was no one except her in the room. Karim, immediately tried to force himself on the girl. Police said, when she tried to stop him and raise an alarm, Karim thrashed her and even threatened to kill her if she disclosed about the incident to anyone. The girl narrated the ordeal to her parents when she reached home. The accused is a distant cousin of the girl. Karim has been on the run since the incident took place.
Police said the girl had been going to the madrasa from the last three months. However, nothing of this sort had occurred with her previously. The maulvi had been teaching and living inside the madrasa from the past few years or so.
