A group of masked men, armed with pistols and choppers, barged into a jewellery store in south Delhi's posh Malviya Nagar market and robbed the owner of jewellery worth over Rs 50 lakh on Thursday afternoon. The act was caught on CCTV footage and on the basis of this the cops are trying to identify the accused.

According to senior police officers, the incident took place around 12 pm, when Pramod Jain, owner of Jain Jewellery corner in M-Block Malviya Nagar, was at his shop with one of his helpers.

"The owner said that he heard sound of two motorbikes arriving at his showroom and within seconds four men entered into his shop with country-made pistols and choppers in their hands. He said their faces were hidden and they warned Jain to make no move otherwise they would shoot him," said a senior police officer.

One of the accused held Jain captive, while the others emptied his jewellery on display, and in the safe, into a bag they were carrying. Once the miscreants had fled, Jain ran out of his showroom and alerted local residents and neighbours, after which a PCR call was made.

Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal said that a call was received around 12.10pm and a police team, along with forensics, were sent to the spot. "CCTV footages from the vicinity are being scanned to identify the robbers and trace the vehicles used in the crime. We have asked the owner to provide us with a list of the stolen items. As stated by him, robbers managed to make away with jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh. We are probing the matter," Biswal said.

Police also said that Jain's employees at the jewellery showroom are being questioned and a list of his previous employees has also been made. Locals also raised concerns over the security in the area demanding that the police conduct more regular patrols and step up vigilance in the area.
