The Uttar Pradesh government's Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana (mass wedding scheme) attracted swindlers and that too much-married couples. It has come to light that in a mass wedding event in Greater Noida on February 24, 11 married couples sneaked in. Sources said they were not just married but also had children. It may be noted that couple who get married under the scheme get monetary aid — Rs 20,000 and gifts and jewellery.

"Media reports have suggested that 11 couples from Cheeti-Nangla of Danakur who participated in the event were already married; it also stated that many of them were from financially sound families. We have formed a committee to look up on all the couples who tied knot in the event that day. So far, four couples from the Cheeti Nangla village have been identified and we have asked the police to take legal action against them," said BN Singh, District Magistrate, Gautam Budh Nagar.

Singh further said, "we have asked the committee to submit their reports as soon as possible so that action against others can also be taken at the earliest. One of the accused, identified as Ravindra, was already married with two children and works at an MNC."

"The purpose of the 'Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana' is to help people living below poverty line. We will take action against those responsible for selecting the couples without checking their backgrounds," said Singh.

The Uttar Pradesh government launched the mass marriage scheme in October 2017, wherein Rs 35,000 is given to each couple, including household items as gifts.

Under the scheme, Rs 20,000 is deposited in the bride's bank account, Rs 10,000 is spent on gifts and Rs 5,000 on expenses incurred in wedding arrangements.
