In a departure from their usual slug fest over different issues, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia endorsed the suggestion given by Lt Governor Anil Baijal that education loans should be linked to the National Academic Depository so that it ensures speedy authentication of academic documents. Replying to a letter written by Baijal to him on the Delhi higher education and skill development loan guarantee scheme, he “agreed” with the former’s observation that due diligence is required in courses and institutes for which loans are given, to avoid unscrupulous institutions from benefiting and creating Non performing Assets over time.

Sisodia also wrote that the L-G is right in observing that students have problems approaching multiple banks to find out about the scheme or to apply for it. Hence, a single portal has been created for them to apply for loans under this scheme.

The education minister noted, “The L-G has repeatedly expressed his concern for the students of Delhi who need access to higher education. If the matter is referred to the Government of India via the MHA, it will take years to resolve and will effectively never see the light of day. The needy students of Delhi will be denied the opportunity to access higher education.”

“However, unless the L-G exercises the power vested in him and approves the scheme, needy students completing school education in Delhi will be denied their right to access higher education,” he said, adding that he met the L-G on Friday and submitted the file for approval.
