After trying his luck in many small businesses and startups, none of which turned out to be successful, class XII dropout Rajat hatched a plan to rob his own maternal grandparents at gunpoint. It seems that luck did not favour him this time as well. Not only was it revealed that the pistol he used was made of plastic but he was also nabbed along with his friend Rishabh.

Rajat knew that the elderly couple, Ramlal, 78, and Shakuntala Devi, 68, had recently sold a property for a hefty amount. The incident took place around noon on Saturday, when the couple was on their own at home in Rohini, Sector 7.

"Rishabh entered the house on the pretext of checking gas stove. He went to the kitchen and tried to keep Ramlal engaged. Meanwhile, Rajat entered the house wearing a helmet so as to avoid identification," DCP Rishi Pal (Rohini) said.

"One of them pulled out a pistol directing the couple to stay quiet. Another went inside to search for valuables and cash. Sensing an opportunity, Ramlal raised an alarm," the DCP said.

Hearing his cries, the neighbours barged into the house and overpowered the intruders who were armed with a pistol and a hammer. Shakuntala Devi, who got injured during the scuffle is out of danger now.

Pal said a toy pistol and a hammer were recovered from the accused and a case was registered against them. The Delhi Police will also honour the Good Samaritans for their courage, he said.
