A nine year old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour when she was alone in her house, in outer Delhi's Samaypur Badli area.

The accused is currently absconding and teams have been formed to nab him.

The incident comes just a day before the sixth anniversary of the horrific New Delhi gang-rape case which hit occurred in the national capital on December 16, 2012, and provides a stark reminder that women's safety still remains an issue of concern.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the girl was alone at home. Her parents, who work as labourers, were out for work when the incident took place.

Police officials revealed that they received a call from the girl's uncle who informed them about the incident. The girl was admitted to a local hospital as she had sustained minor injuries.

The police said the family knew the 28-year old accused who resided in the adjacent house.

In the afternoon, he allegedly went to her house. On finding her alone, he forced himself on her. He threatened the girl not to reveal about the incident to anyone and left the house.

The girl came out of her house weeping and informed her parents about the incident. The police rushed the girl to a nearby hospital where her medical examination confirmed rape. The girl is under observation at the hospital.

"When the accused got to know about the girl's parents calling the police, he fled from the location. Teams have been formed to nab him. We have some leads and the accused will be in our custody soon," a police officer said.

A case under the relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the Baski police station.

Further investigations are underway, said a senior police official.
