Making a mockery of the healthcare system in the Capital, a man posed as a doctor and even attended to patients at the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Central government’s Safdarjung hospital for weeks, before being nabbed red-handed on Monday.

According to sources, the accused, going by the name of Dr Avinash Anand, had been making rounds of the Safdarjung hospital on a regular basis while duping hundreds of patients every day. The hospital administration smelled a rat when a patient’s family complained about a doctor who took Rs 50,000 from them. Since then, the authority was in search of this man.

“He was caught from the Orthopaedics department of our hospital. The resident doctors in the department had been noticing him for quite a while. When they got hold of him on Monday, he tried to run away. We have lodged an FIR with the police and the man is in the police custody,” Medical Superintendent Dr AK Rai said.

Even in his Facebook profile, the accused has mentioned that he is a doctor at AIIMS. Doctors at the premier institute confirmed that the man was found inside the campus a few days ago.

“A huge number of slips was recovered from his possession, proving that a large amount of money was deposited in his account. He had fake ID cards, with the stamp of AIIMS on them. He had gained entry to the Orthopaedics department of AIIMS, claiming that he was a doctor at the Trauma Centre,” a senior AIIMS doctor said.

A senior police officer said: “So far, no case has been registered. The accused said he had come to the hospital to meet a patient. He claimed that he has a PhD degree in Yoga. Several bank payment slips have been recovered from his possession. The allegations made against him are being verified and further investigation is underway.”
