Refused a drink of water, a 40-year-old man bludgeoned his father to death in front of his 14-year-old daughter in southwest Delhi on Friday night, the police said.

The accused, identified only as Chetan, lives with his daughter, while his 75-year-old father Ramkumar lived in the flat adjacent to his house.

According to the police, Chetan approached his father on Friday asking for water since there was a shortage of water in the area. But Ramkumar refused, saying that since there was a crisis, Chetan could not have water for the alcohol he was planning to drink. Enraged at being turned down by his father, Chetan thrashed him till Ramkumar collapsed. Later, he rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, the police said.

Chetan has three children, and his wife has left him due to his excessive drinking to stay separately with their four-year-old son. His daughter and 12-year-old son live with their father.

The daughter told the police, “He (Chetan) punched and kicked him (Ramkumar) until he fainted and fell to the ground.” The girl further revealed that her father had initially asked her to get water, but she could not give him any since there was none at home.

Chetan had started driving an e-rickshaw around six months ago and returned home after work around 10 pm on Friday. Ramkumar worked as a linesmen for MTNL and had retired a few years ago. After his wife’s death, Chetan asked his father to do all the housework and, under the influence of alcohol, would often bash him up if he failed to finish the work.

“The father and son would have heated arguments on a daily basis, with Chetan beating Ramkumar up. On Friday, when we heard noises, we thought it was a usual fight that broke out between them. Later, his daughter came running to us and asked for help. By the time we reached, Ramkumar was already on the ground,” said a neighbour.

“A case of murder has been registered and the accused has been arrested. Further investigations are underway,” said DCP (southwest) Surender Kumar.
