An accused who was arrested for sexually assaulting a minor girl, allegedly hanged himself in the lock-up at Karawal Nagar police station. Following the alleged suicide, four police personnel were suspended and an inspector rank personnel was sent to the district line, senior police officers said.

The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Deepak alias Pope. According to the police, it was last year that a 17-year-old girl, who stayed in the same locality as Deepak, had accused him of molesting her. A case was then registered against him.
However, the police said the girl was friends with Deepak and it was only after she learnt that he had a criminal record and was a drug addict, she started distancing herself from him. She told the police that the man started stalking her and even uploaded an obscene video of the girl online, police said.
Police said, as told by the girl, it was in July last year when Deepak reached the girl’s house and threatened her family to not keep her away from him. He even attacked the girl with an iron and she sustained injuries. Following the incident, a case was registered but Deepak went absconding. Later, a city court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
Deepak was arrested on Monday.“He was in police custody at the Karawal Nagar Police Station. Around 10 am on Tuesday, he was found hanging and was taken to the GTB hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said a police officer.
Following the death, three assistant sub-inspectors and a sub-inspector were suspended for alleged negligence in the matter. An inspector-rank personnel has been sent to district line. Further action in the matter will be initiated after the judicial inquiry, police informed.
However, the family of the deceased alleged they were not allowed to meet him when they had gone to the police station. They also claimed that the police demanded money from them and even alleged foul play in Deepak’s death.
