Man impersonating a cop arrested in Delhi's Jyoti Nagar

The accused has been identified as 26-year-old Ashish Chaudhary, a resident of the Mandoli Extension area

A Delhi Police team has arrested a man who impersonated a policeman to extort money from shopkeepers and from those consuming alcohol in open in areas of northeast Delhi. A Delhi Police uniform and other articles issued usually to a cop were also recovered from the accused.

The accused has been identified as 26-year-old Ashish Chaudhary, a resident of the Mandoli Extension area. According to senior police officers, it was on Tuesday when a police team deployed in civvies near a wine shop in Jyoti Nagar noticed a man wearing a Delhi Police constable's uniform with a nameplate reading - Ashish Chaudhary. Another person accompanying the man in uniform was seen interrogating and threatening a youth by the name of Bittu Sharma.

DCP northeast, Ajit Singla said, suspicious of Chaudhary's behaviour, sub-inspector Amrender asked him about his place of posting and about his presence in the area of Jyoti Nagar area. "On this, Chaudhary replied that he is in control room of east district. Then Amrender asked about his PIS number which Chaudhary could not tell. He was then apprehended for questioning. It was during interrogation, Chaudhary said that he was extorting money from Bittoo. He had also threatened him that he will arrest him in a false case of theft if the money was not paid," Singla said.
