A 40-year-old man died reportedly after a portion of a ceiling fell on his head in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar late on Tuesday evening. The matter came to light on Wednesday, when a passerby informed the police that a foul smell was emanating from a locked apartment.

According to the police, the man was identified as Vasant and he died after a cement slab from the roof fell on him. His family, however, alleged that he was bludgeoned to death by neighbours.

Vasant, who ran a grocery shop on the ground floor of the building, lived with his family on the second floor in a rented accommodation, the police said. “When we inspected the crime spot, it was found that pieces of the cement slab were scattered on the floor. Prima facie, it appears that the slab struck him on the head,” a senior police officer said.

He added that the family was alleging foul play in the death as they did not get along with the neighbouring family.

The police have registered a case and the investigation is on.
