A 22-year-old youth, working as a mechanical assistant at a Metro construction site, was allegedly beaten up by a group of people, who accused him of being a cattle thief, in southeast Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan area.

According to the complaint registered on Sunday, the incident took place at 1.30am on Friday. The complainant, Iftikhar Alam, said he was returning home from work along with his driver. When they reached the area, a vehicle was blocking the road. So, he got down from his SUV to inquire into the matter.

Speaking to DNA, Alam said as he was walking towards the truck, nearly 10 men pushed him to a side and dragged him to the nearby slums. "They asked me my name and hurled religious slurs at me. They even called me 'Pakistani' and accused me of stealing cattle and diesel. They tied my hands and legs and thrashed me. I knew one of them and I requested them to stop hitting me, but to no avail," Alam said. Later, more men joined the mob and beat Alam till he fell unconsious.

The crowd then called up the police. "I was taken to the Sarai Kale Khan police post, where I was thrashed again. The cops asked me to accept that I had stolen diesel. They made me sign some papers as well. Only after that was I taken to hospital," Alam added.

He is currently recuperating at the Jeevan Hospital.

The police, however, stated that there was some quarrel regarding the tempo parked in the middle of the road. "Alam had a fight with a group of people, residents of the same area, and he had received some injuries. The matter was settled the same night," DCP southeast Romil Baaniya said.

This is the second such incident in less than 10 hours. Earlier, six men were thrashed for transporting buffaloes in Baba Haridas Nagar area.
