Some time ago, 17-year-old Vikas Kumar was not even aware that the world observes a day to honour blood donors. This very day, however, has now restored the Madhubani resident's faith in humanity. Not to mention the commendable generosity of a complete stranger, who broke his Ramzan fast to help Kumar.

Three months ago, Kumar came to the Capital from Bihar with high hopes. The doctors in his district suspected him to be suffering from cancer, and so he decided to visit a prominent hospital in the city. But day by day, three months passed and his treatment at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital did not even begin. Kumar had been asked to get four units of replacement blood for his treatment, which he was unable to procure.

"The hospital authorities told us that first we need to get four units of blood, and then only my brother will be admitted," said Roshan Kumar, the patient's 24-year-old brother who works in a spun polyester thread factory. Despite being in the prime of his life, Roshan weighs under 50 kg and was not suitable for blood donation himself.

After knocking on the countless doors, the two had almost given up. But then on Wednesday, on the occasion of the World Blood Donor Day, Roshan approached all the people who had come to participate in the hospital's donation drive.

Finally, Delhi resident Farooque Khan, who was accompanying an ill relative, heard Roshan's tale and decided to help. The Good Samaritan, who was observing roza, decided to break his fast in order to help the brothers.
"The month of Ramzan is about praying and helping those in need. We donate to charities and feed thousands of people during the month. Then, why not do this and save a life?" Khan said.

Kumar has now secured two units of blood and hopefully, will be able to get admission in the hospital.
