Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav, along with social activists Swami Agnivesh, Dr Sunilam, and Avik Saha of the Jai Kisan Andolan, addressed the media on Tuesday, after being denied permission to visit the Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh (MP). The founding member of Swaraj Abhiyan and Jai Kisan Andolan, Yadav, alleged that the government was hiding something as it was not letting political activists visit the area.

A farmers' protest in Mandsaur, which began on June 1, had taken a violent turn on June 6, when five farmers were killed in police firing. After a week, a delegation including Yadav was denied permission to visit the area.

"The government is not allowing us to go to the place of incident. Firing on protesters was a planned murder," Yadav said. "In MP, the focus is production-oriented and not producer-oriented. Farmers are not getting the minimum support price. They are discontented and in huge debt," he added.

Yadav also demanded that the High Court (HC) should conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident while the government must ensure remunerative prices for the farmers.

Agnivesh said democratic rights were being violated in MP. He said the people of India and even the media do not have the freedom to go there. Echoing his sentiment, Avik Saha and Dr Sunilam said the media must go to Mandsaur and find out what is happening there. The Jai Kisan Andolan promised to support the protest and announced forming an independent citizen group probe the incident. The group also confirmed that a maha panchayat will be held in this regard in MP on July 6.
