A 29-year-old man, who claimed he was robbed off Rs 14 lakh by bike-borne assailants in East Delhi's Shahdara area, was arrested after police discovered that he lied and faked the robbery. Police were also successful in recovering the entire amount from him.

Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara said,"The accused has been identified as Ramu Poddar. During the investigation, we checked the route taken by the victim and it came to fore that the time taken to cross one of the underpass, which ideally should be five minutes, took him 45 minutes."

Medical opinion taken from doctors stated that the injuries could have been self-inflicted. When police questioned him, he broke down and revealed he was in need of money and thus concocted the story.

Poddar had called up the police on Sunday stating he got into an argument with two persons after which the cash he was carrying was robbed and he was attacked with a knife. Poddar told police that he has worked as a driver with Satya Narayan Bhutani, a businessman, for the past eight years. Narayan had asked him to collect cash payment of Rs 14 lakh from Friends Colony.

"Poddar had said that while returning, he saw a police picket at Kasturba Nagar underpass and since he was not wearing a helmet, he took the service lane. While he was riding on the service lane, two men on a motorcycle began arguing with him for driving on the wrong side of the road," said Prasad.

He added that later, two more men arrived at the scene and intercepted his scooty and attacked him with a sharp weapon leading to injuries on his neck and arm. The accused men took the cash and his mobile phone, he claimed. A case was registered at Vivek Vihar police station.
