After three days of smouldering heat in the Capital, light rains are expected to hit the city on Wednesday, bringing much-needed respite.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature settled at 43 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal while the minimum temperature was recorded at 34.2 degrees Celsius, which was seven degrees above normal, said officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"A Western Disturbance over Northern India will result in spells of rains and thunderstorms between June 7 and 8. The skies will remain overcast and thunder activity can be witnessed in parts of Delhi-NCR," said R Vishen, scientist-in-charge, IMD's regional weather forecasting centre.

The showers are likely to bring down the maximum and minimum temperatures by at least three to four degrees, he said. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 37 and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The scattered spells of rain will be accompanied with squall and winds exceeding 55 kmph would occur over Delhi/NCR region.

Meanwhile, humidity levels oscillated between 46 and 26 per cent.

The national capital recorded June 4 and 5 as the hottest days of the season with the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at 44.6 and 33.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, at the Safdarjung observatory.
